Play is fundamental not only to my work but to my health and happiness

Just take a look at my desk – today I am playing with willow twigs and watercolour paints – experimenting with different materials to create a puppet of one of my most favourite insects – the wondrous butterfly.

As a child I was captivated by the butterflies miraculous transformation from a caterpillar to a butterfly and as an adult I am just as curious.

Every time I see a butterfly, it is as if it is the very first time, a gift, a miracle, thrilling me – making my spirit dance with excitement.

The Joy of Playing

Today I am playing – like I do every day – its fundamental not only to my work but to my health and wellbeing. Playing gifts me immense joy and satisfaction. Its a freedom I allow myself – its pure, authentic and free flowing… imagining, wondering, exploring possibilities and through this playful exploration, a soulful journey – I discover new ways of creating heart felt art.

To quote the playful Tom Shea – Play is not doing – it is being

I also discover more about myself, in each work of art, whether it is a painting, a sculpture or a stick being – there is a little piece of me. Just like the trees, birds and the insects, we too continue to change and grow throughout our lives. I am recording my playful discoveries today so I can share with my Urban Nature Art group.

The Joy of Sharing

Sharing is also a joy-filled experience, witnessing others rediscover their inner child, their deep rooted connection with the natural world, as they explore possibilities through new mediums; different art materials and natural items collected from nature is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Gifting them an insight into how I go about creating, helps inspire them to discover their unique creative self through their own playfulsoulful experiments.

Do you remember the joy you felt when you were a child playing within nature or when you were allowed the freedom to express yourself creatively – painting, drawing, singing, dancing?
